FAQs

What is CrewCom?
The CrewCom product line was developed from the Connex product line and is manufactured by CoachComm, LLC. With the proven success that Connex has shown in the football market, the CrewCom product line is a perfect fit for other applications, including crane operation, general contracting, directional drilling, utilities, water treatment, sewer, steel erection, industrial plants and many more. The CrewCom product line offers instantly available, telephone-like two-way communication to multiple-users, with interference free clarity, digitally secured private conversations, and up to 10 hours of continuous talk time.

What is the difference between CrewCom and two-way radios?
Two-way radios are not hands free. They require “keying” a button to communicate. This form of communication is called half-duplex. Half-duplex requires the users to wait until the other person is done talking before they can speak in return. This can create an unsafe work environment as it delays the conversation until the “airways” are free. Unlike the CrewCom product line, two-way radios typically require licensing to operate.

What is the difference between CrewCom and cell phones?
Cell phones are not hands free. Cell phones require dialing a phone number or “keying” a button to communicate with other users. The delay involved with “keying” a button to communicate makes safety a major concern. The battery life on a cell phone will not reach that of the CrewCom product line. The cell phone only has one channel of communication. A cell phone “in use” or “out of range” is not always available.

Will the CrewCom system interfere with my two-way radio or cell phone?
No, the CrewCom system will not interfere with your current form of job-site communication. The CrewCom system operates in the 2.4 GHz bandwidth and because of its’ FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) technology, the frequencies change 200 times per second. This allows the user to be worry free from any type of interference.

How far will CrewCom reach?
The range of the CrewCom system is environmentally driven. With line of sight to the base station users will find that they can travel up to 2000’ in either direction of the base station. Due to the frequency bandwidth in which the CrewCom system operates, performance may diminish with solid obstacles between the user and the base station.

Why do I need full duplex?
With CrewCom’s full duplex communications feature everyone on the system is on a real-time full 2-way conversation like a traditional telephone. With a PTT walkie-talkie or cell phone connect system you can only broadcast to other users. One person speaks and everyone else listens. If two people try to broadcast at the same time the system will fail. This can be a real problem in critical applications.

How many users will a CrewCom system handle?
The CrewCom System can hand up to 9 users per base station and a total of 2 base stations can be used together. With 9 users, 5 will be wireless and 4 will be wired. With two base stations connected together, 10 users will be wireless and 8 will be wired. The CrewCom system can be configured to any application with as few as 2 users.
